Staying Healthy During the Holidays

Shop the Look

We all know that this time of the year is super hard to stay on track with healthy eating and exercise.  With all of the holiday parties, boozing and events centered around food it can be very tough to stay the course.  I'll be honest, I usually get off track a bit as well.  Here are 4 easy hacks on how to stay fit during the holidays.

1). Plan a workout/activity tradition on the holidays.  There are so many Turkey Trots and fun runs that are family friendly. Make it  an annual tradition, and find an activity you can do as a family. Most fitness studios have a class on these days, especially Thanksgiving.  My husband and I sometimes go to his Crossfit class together, or I go do a Yoga class.  I actually look forward to being off work and getting a good sweat on.  I feel like this gets you motivated for the day!

2).  Start your morning off right!  If you know you are going to be eating a lot during the day, or more indulgent than normal, start your morning off super healthy.  Try some egg whites and veggies, or a shake for breakfast.  There is no reason to be unhealthy all day long, right?

3). Try not to drink too many calories.  You know I am all about only drinking calories if there is booze involved.  And if you are using a mixer, try to stick with soda water, or my favorite La Croix.  There are also tons of low sugar, wine options available.  A few of my favorites are, Skinnygirl cocktails, Dry Farm Wines and FitVine wines.

4).  If you are in charge of a dish - make it healthy!  We know there will be plenty of options that are not healthy, why not make yours something you know you will eat?  I do not cook, so I am always looking for something super easy.  Give this Trader Joe's Riced Cauliflower Stuffing a try!

5).  Fill your plate up mostly with the healthy stuff, and try to get full on that.  Turkey (no gravy), ham, green bean casserole (try to avoid the crispy onions), and salad are always a good go to.

I know we are not going to be perfect during the holidays, but why wait until January to get back on track?  The closer you stay on track the easier it is to get back on track.

Have a healthy and happy holiday season!
