If I do an early morning workout (like 5 am or 6 am), I usually make a protein shake the night before. I mix it up with all different kind of shakes. Here is my common theme - low fat, low carb, high protein, and contains some fiber. I have tried and like Shakeology, Quest Nutrition, 310 Shake and Advocare Pre-Workout. Right now I am loving the brand Clovis's paleo friendly shakes. They have a pre-workout formula that has natural caffeine, 10 grams of protein, 3 grams of prebiotic fiber, 9 net carbs and 6 grams BCAA's. I usually drink half before my workout and half after. If I'm out of time to drink a shake, I just grab a handful of almonds and walk out the door. Protein shakes can help prevent muscle breakdown, and refill your muscle energy to increase blood flow to your muscles.
And, as always, I take my 2 Catalyst pills and Spark 30 minutes before my workouts. And my go to water obsession to keep me hydrated is Defiance Fuel: use code 30df for $50 off 5 cases of water.
If I am doing a later morning workout, in the 8-10 AM range, I like to eat a little something and have something in my belly.
Here some of my favorite pre-workout snacks:
Cottage Cheese - I get 2% cottage cheese that come in a 6-pack, which have 2.5 grams of fat, 90 calories, 7 carbs and 10 grams of protein. Plus cottage cheese has additional benefits. It contains a dairy protein called casein, which is a slow digesting dairy protein, so you will feel fuller longer. Casein also raises amino acid levels in your blood to give you sustained energy.
Protein Bar - again, always going for lower carb and higher fiber and protein. My favorites are Quest Bars (a post on protein bars coming soon!).
Protein Shake- (see above)
Egg whites - on GG Crackers or wrapped in a low carb wrap
GG Crackers and almond/cashew butter
I always strive to give my body some protein before a workout and always lower (not zero) carb options.
Happy working out!
Crystal
